No-Gi BJJ: What It Is, Why It's Popular in Florida & How to Start

By Gracie Barra Davenport · June 2026

If you've seen UFC or ADCC highlights, you've seen No-Gi BJJ — fast-paced grappling in rash guards and shorts instead of the traditional kimono (Gi). No-Gi is one of the fastest-growing formats in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and it's especially popular here in Florida where summer temperatures make training in a heavy Gi uncomfortable.

Gi vs No-Gi: The Key Differences

Gi BJJ uses the traditional uniform (kimono) with a jacket, pants, and belt. You can grip the fabric for control, chokes, and sweeps. It's slower, more technical, and rewards patience and precision. No-Gi removes the uniform — you wear a rash guard and shorts. Without fabric to grip, the game becomes faster, more athletic, and more dependent on body control, underhooks, and wrestling-style positioning.

Why No-Gi Is Huge in Florida

Florida summers regularly hit 95°F+ with 80% humidity. Training in a heavy cotton Gi during June through September is brutal. No-Gi solves this — a lightweight rash guard and shorts are significantly cooler, dry faster, and feel more comfortable in the heat. This is why many Florida gyms see No-Gi attendance spike dramatically from May through September.

No-Gi also has a direct crossover to MMA (fighters don't wear Gis in the cage) and self-defense (attackers don't wear kimonos). For students interested in practical application, No-Gi techniques translate more directly to real-world scenarios.

No-Gi at Gracie Barra Davenport

At Gracie Barra Davenport, No-Gi is included in your BJJ membership — not a separate program. Our weekly schedule includes dedicated No-Gi sessions alongside Gi classes, so you can train both formats and develop a complete grappling game. Self-Defense and No-Gi specific classes run Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

For kids, our No-Gi sessions focus on anti-bullying scenarios and wrestling-style positions — practical skills that work in real schoolyard situations where no one is wearing a kimono.

What to Wear

For your first No-Gi class, you need: a rash guard (tight-fitting athletic shirt), board shorts or grappling shorts (no zippers or pockets), and that's it. No special equipment required. Many students start with any tight-fitting athletic wear they already own and upgrade to a proper rash guard later.
